The satellite is the NPP (NPOESS Preparatory Project), one of a new generation of satellites designed to collect critical climate and weather data. The “first light” image above was captured by the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite), an onboard instrument that collects in visible and infrared wavelengths from 22 channels across the electromagnetic spectrum. This new view will greatly expand our ability to observe changes on Earth’s surface—fires, ice, ocean color, vegetation, clouds, and land and sea surface temperatures—and deepen our understanding of global changes underway, both human-caused and natural.

Fact:

Mother Jones was founded as a nonprofit in 1976 because we knew corporations and billionaires wouldn't fund the type of hard-hitting journalism we set out to do.

Today, reader support makes up about two-thirds of our budget, allows us to dig deep on stories that matter, and lets us keep our reporting free for everyone. If you value what you get from Mother Jones, please join us with a tax-deductible donation today so we can keep on doing the type of journalism 2022 demands.
