The 1950s and 1960s found militarists drooling over the thought of a Jetson-esque universe in which the United States owned and setting up camp on the moon, according to a recent article in the BULLETIN OF THE ATOMIC SCIENTISTS.

Although the idea may have been stifled thanks to the moon-for-peace presidents of Eisenhowser, Kennedy, and Johnson, there are still hopes our sad-faced hunk of stellar cheese could become a missile base and head spy quarters for the US.

The “Soviet threat” was the original fuel for these plans, but some have found a unique reason for colonizing the moon with high-tech toys: Well if we don’t do it, someone else will.
