Town fights to keep water dirty

In Fallon, Nev., the tap water contains more than twice the amount of arsenic the federal government considers safe to ingest. And the town’s leaders are fighting to keep it that way.

The former Navy town is so skeptical of federal interference in its affairs that it refuses to acknowledge the considerable health hazards to townfolk, or to install a water filtration system to minimize the risk. Fallon’s representatives allege that the Environmental Protection Agency has steadily lowered the threshold for the amount of toxins in drinking water in order to extract fines from city governments across the country.
