Hotmail Corp.
To lure more users to MSN, Microsoft bought Hotmail on the eve of New Year’s Day 1998 for an estimated $395 million. A leading Web-based provider of free electronic mail, Hotmail currently counts more than 10 million active subscribers, and is adding 70,000 per day. Now these millions must access their free e-mail through a Gates-owned Web site that steers them to MSN—a traffic boost that should allow MSN to boost its ad rates.

Fact:

Mother Jones was founded as a nonprofit in 1976 because we knew corporations and billionaires wouldn't fund the type of hard-hitting journalism we set out to do.

Today, reader support makes up about two-thirds of our budget, allows us to dig deep on stories that matter, and lets us keep our reporting free for everyone. If you value what you get from Mother Jones, please join us with a tax-deductible donation today so we can keep on doing the type of journalism 2022 demands.
