Beginning in 1989, Gates has amassed the world’s largest digital photo archive by purchasing the venerable Bettmann Collection and the digital rights to images from Ansel Adams, Russia’s Hermitage museum, and hundreds of other suppliers. Now he’s got more than 20 million images, and they’re available online—for a fat fee. Corbis also produces Trip, a travel image gallery viewable only with Internet Explorer.
