At issue

Bill Clinton’s Big Mac attacks haven’t helped boycotters tarnish the Golden Arches. McD’s declined to comment anyway. (Incidentally, Whopper fans should note that the ’87 boycott against Burger King was rescinded later that year, after BK stopped using beef raised on Costa Rican rain-forest land; word has never really gotten out.)

Impact

McD’s is under fire for 1) test-marketing a “veggie burger” in the Netherlands–U.S. animal-rights groups want it served here; 2) wasteful beef production–Greenpeace (London) says it causes world hunger; and 3) paying inner-city workers in Philadelphia less than their suburban counterparts.

Fact:

Mother Jones was founded as a nonprofit in 1976 because we knew corporations and billionaires wouldn't fund the type of hard-hitting journalism we set out to do.

Today, reader support makes up about two-thirds of our budget, allows us to dig deep on stories that matter, and lets us keep our reporting free for everyone. If you value what you get from Mother Jones, please join us with a tax-deductible donation today so we can keep on doing the type of journalism 2022 demands.
