Barbara Coe and Ron Rrince (above) co-founded California’s Proposition 187, the “Save our State” initiative, which would deny education and health services to 2.1 million undocumented immigrants. They are cynical about getting it passed. “Anywhere from 25 percent to 50 percent of the people will go into the voting booth, read the title of the initiative, and make up their mind at that moment,” Prince said. The measure is publicly tied to Gov. Pete Wilson, but Prince snapped off my tape recorder to say that Wilson is a phony on illegal immigration, only supporting the measure when it became clear he needed to move to the right. Recorder back on: “We’re very confident in Wilson and are glad he’s supporting our initiative.” We never officially went off the record, so too bad, Ron.

Fact:

Mother Jones was founded as a nonprofit in 1976 because we knew corporations and billionaires wouldn't fund the type of hard-hitting journalism we set out to do.

Today, reader support makes up about two-thirds of our budget, allows us to dig deep on stories that matter, and lets us keep our reporting free for everyone. If you value what you get from Mother Jones, please join us with a tax-deductible donation today so we can keep on doing the type of journalism 2022 demands.
