WATCH: Airing the Komen Foundation’s Dirty Pink Laundry [Saunders Cartoon]

Editors’ note: Mother Jones illustrator Zina Saunders creates editorial animations riffing on the political news and current events of the week. In this week’s animation, the Susan G. Komen Foundation airs its corporate laundry. The cancer foundation received an outpouring of criticism after it cut its cancer-screening grants to Planned Parenthood. After a widespread public protest, Komen reversed its decision—kind of. But the foundation still continues its long-running practice of “pink washing” corporate sponsors who sell products with chemicals that may link to the kinds of cancer Komen is on a mission to end. The animation, as always, was written, animated and acted by Zina Saunders.

Fact:

Mother Jones was founded as a nonprofit in 1976 because we knew corporations and billionaires wouldn't fund the type of hard-hitting journalism we set out to do.

Today, reader support makes up about two-thirds of our budget, allows us to dig deep on stories that matter, and lets us keep our reporting free for everyone.
